The renewed Women's Baltic Basketball League (WBBL) has taken another step forward. Liga Goldmane, who is responsible for women's basketball at the Latvian Basketball Federation, has become the Development Director of the League.
"Until recently, all the organizational activities of the WBBL were in the hands of Lithuanians, and Goldmane supervised only the matters related to Latvian clubs. We wanted the Latvian side to be more involved in all the activities and development of the League, to be an active part of the League both in discussing possible decisions and in making and implementing them," said WBBL President Arvydas Klovas. "We are glad that the representative of our neighbors is willing to actively contribute, and I believe that together we will raise the League to the next level."
This season, 13 teams compete in the Baltic League: 7 from Latvia and 6 from Lithuania. Two Estonian teams also participated in the tournament a year ago.
"We have ensured the development of our common league by working together with Lithuanian and Estonian colleagues for five years. During this time we have grown from an eight club tournament up to thirteen. Now it is time to go a step further and shift the emphasis from quantity to quality," said Goldmane. "Together, the historical organization Baltic Women’s Basketball League has been legally renewed, and I am very honored to become a part of this team. In the next season, we plan to set high goals, stricter order, and requirements for club participation in the Baltic League. We are considering the possibility of approaching teams from other countries as well, in order to promote the development of the league and women's basketball throughout our region."
The first place in the WBBL standings is currently occupied by Neptunas-Amberton Klaipeda, which has won 15 victories in 18 games. The defending champion TTT-Riga has 13 victories, but the team has not yet suffered a single defeat. Kibirkstis Vilnius (17 games) and LCC International University Klaipeda (16 games) have also won 13 times each.
