The highlight of the week was the intense battles that saw Aistes-LSMU Kaunas secure their spot among the top seven, leaving last season's bronze medalists, RSU, on the outside looking in.
Aistes-LSMU experienced a rollercoaster week, marked by two nail-biting victories that clinched their playoff berth. Their journey began in Liepaja, facing off against their direct competitors, Liepaja/LSSS. Despite losing to the Latvian team in their first encounter in Kaunas on November 15th by a score of 65:61, the Lithuanians managed a revenge win in Liepaja with an identical margin of 69:65.
The game was a testament to the unpredictability of basketball. After the first quarter, the home team led 20:11, but the visitors turned the game around by halftime and led by 17 points (58:41) in the third quarter. However, Liepaja/LSSS launched an 18:0 run to retake the lead (63:62). In a thrilling final two minutes, Aistes-LSMU showcased resilience and superior play to emerge victorious with a final score of 69:65.
Key players for Aistes-LSMU included Gevile Savostaite and Gintare Paulauskaite, who both recorded double-doubles, scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds and 20 points with 12 rebounds, respectively. Kazolina Kazociunaite also made a significant contribution with 17 points and 8 rebounds.
The second victory for the Kaunas team was a close call against the winless TTT Juniores Riga, despite having a comfortable lead of 64:49 at one point. TTT Juniores made an impressive comeback to tie the game at 71:71 with just one minute to go, but a crucial free throw by Gintare Mazionyte secured a hard-fought 72:71 win for the visitors.
Guste Dziatkauskaite led the scoring for Aistes-LSMU with 21 points, while Savostaite again impressed with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
TTT Juniores saw five players scoring in double digits, a rarity for the team, with Elina Briede and Zane Sraudovska leading with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
This win confirmed Aistes-LSMU's place in the playoffs, leaving RSU out despite their win 68:64 over Panevezys this week. Meanwhile, Panevezys managed a victory against TTT Juniores, winning 68:58.
